The visitor centre at Ramon Colours Park is conceived as a meeting point between the unique geological landscape of the Ramon Crater, the site’s industrial heritage and the visitor experience, with the historic kiln preserved as the architectural and experiential focal point of the complex. The centre comprises a series of pavilions built in exposed concrete and local stone, sheltered beneath a large steel canopy that provides shade while establishing a sculptural presence within the desert landscape. The arrangement of buildings and open spaces creates a journey of exploration around the historic remains, allowing visitors to experience the scale, materiality and history of the site at close range. Alongside exhibition and learning spaces presenting the story of the quarry and its rehabilitation, the centre provides a welcoming desert refuge for travellers, bringing together the site’s industrial past, ancient landscape and contemporary architecture.
